            Key conventions

Language:
The title, tag-line and billing block all follow the expected codes and conventions of a film poster. The effect created here is by the title, the word ‘Alien’ shows that it is something out of the world, possibly in space as it has a very dark background. The tagline creates the idea that there is an alien in space alone.

Institution:
The film was produced by, Gale Ann Hurd, who produces Sci-fi and horror movies. Alien was very successful being awarded for the best science fiction film.
Audience: I suggest that the film is targeted at mainly boys more than girls, because of the dark colors and the alien-like effects.  Boys are mostly more intrigued with out of space themes and abnormal creatures than girls are. The movie could be rated 15 as there may be unpleasant, inappropriate scenes for younger children that could frighten them.

Representation:
The picture shows and Alien cracking its way of an egg, you cannot see the features of the creature but the audience can make out that it is an Alien from the title and the bright green light glowing out the egg which is a colour that represents Aliens. You can also realize that the film is set in outer space because of the pitch black darkness and the tag line.
